Together, we traverse our grief as we traverse the slopes: finding our way while walking together, all the time in our senses. Lying out under the Milky Way galaxy after dinner, staring through the deep dark, conversation, insights and connections emerge in ways not possible under streetlights. We adapt to terrain and weather as we feel the metaphors to our own grief journeys. At Goat Lake, we often get to play in the snow in t-shirts under the midsummer sun. The Pacific Crest of the Cascade Mountains takes us out of our minds, into our hearts and the vast world of possibility and change. We remember each moment is all we ever have, and we live it on this journey with people who know something of what we feel and experience. The grief can rise up and soak us, we can be discouraged and exhausted climbing over headlands and back to sea, and the waves roar, but then become calm. The journey for a moment can seem endless. And then we find camp, make shelter, start a fire and share the awe. We trade our protective hiking boots for bare feet and the sand between our toes. We navigate the tangle of driftwood logs that were once alive and towering – and, transformed, are still so beautiful. We were embraced by endless hues of green as we trekked into the towering cedar forest never cut by a steel saw. The flow of the Quinault River in torrents and eddies changed on our journey upriver, reminding us of our own changes in our grief. The shifting river had cleared flats large enough to watch streaks of meteors in the starry night. Venturing deeper into the Olympic National Park on our day hikes away from camp, we encountered toppled trees with saplings growing on their downed trunks. We sat and rested together for an hour, examined a twelve-foot root ball, and spoke of things we can change and things we cannot. As a proud daughter of farmworkers, Marisol cares deeply about community, collective healing, conservation, and social justice. She moved to Seattle to continue her education at Seattle University and the University of Washington where she earned a Master of Communication in Communities & Networks. Marisol works as a Co-Director for Washington Farmland Trust, an environmental organization focused on conserving threatened farmland to keep in production and making it accessible to a new generation of farmers. In her spare time, Marisol serves on the board of EchoX and volunteers with Climbers of Color. After the passing of her beloved father Daniel Morales, Marisol was introduced to Wild Grief through a friend at UW. She is grateful to have found a community where her grief is welcomed and can share in the healing power of nature. As a guide, she hopes to continue supporting individuals and families on their grief journeys. She moved to Seattle in 2020, where part of her work and activism focuses on increasing diversity in pediatric research, including the nature gap (disparities in the outdoors).Jacque grew up in an Indigenous Mexican American family that strongly put forth the teachings of nature. After the tragic death of her childhood friend in 2017 and the passing of her grandmother in 2019, she reconnected with the early lessons of her childhood. In the spring after her 16th birthday she was able to attend a wild grief backpacking trip along the Skokomish River. Through that experience she was able to find that being in nature always grounds her and brings her peace and insight when she needs it. Last year she was able to join the Wild Grief team as a guide and she feels she has never been so lucky to give back to an organization. She is currently in school, studying Agricultural Science, Communication and Leadership as well as Agricultural Business and International Agriculture at the University of Idaho. She grew up in Western Washington in the small town of Buckley and spent most of her time raising various forms of livestock. She is an alumni of the National FFA Organization, having spent her years in high school showing pigs and competing in various public speaking contests. Additionally she is an alumni of Washington State 4-H and still actively works to give back to that organization whenever she can. Through 4-H she showed various species and attended numerous national teen conferences. She is passionate about giving back to the organizations who have given so much to her whenever possible. Teresa provides grief support indoors as a bereavement clinician and hospital social worker in Seattle. Discovering the intentional community of Wild Grief has felt like a true melding of passions. She came to Seattle as a foreign student and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Seattle University. Her experiences with loss started early in life with the sudden loss of her brother. Over the years she has experienced many other losses, most recently her mom to covid-19. This profound experience led to them holding immense value for the privilege, challenges, and gifts of being present during the dying processes of their loved ones. They have since been incredibly passionate about tending and restoring a healthy culture around dying, loss and grief. Kendra is a well-seasoned outdoor facilitator with experience leading all ages in the outdoors. While working as a guide for ten years on backpacking, rock-climbing, and rafting expeditions, they found their passion for supporting others while creating transformational containers in nature. Most recently they worked for Rite of Passage Journeys and served as co-founding assistant director and instructor for a local outdoor forest school. Kendra is a trained rites of passage practitioner, community herbalist, grief guide, arts facilitator, living funeral practitioner and float therapy guide. They are passionate about supporting people toward authenticity and vitality while teaching skills for resilience and community. In 2019, Kendra was in a life-changing pedestrian accident that left them mostly bedridden for two years and their physical abilities permanently altered. Rainier three times and trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. She has experienced grief in many forms and is a published author with her memoir, Learning to Fly surrounding her own personal grief and trauma. On her off days, she enjoys sequestering herself reading and writing with her husband and dog in their cabin, just outside Mt. Rainier National Park.
